An intelligent book about mature relationships
By Annie Cameron
Mature adore and relations are topics that are mostly neglected in blurb fiction, during slightest in my experience.
'Second Stories' follows a paths of 4 intertwined American couples--Geo and Lydia, Nick and Bonnie, Sam and Patti, and Joe and Angie-- from a in 1950s and 60s, when their relations began, adult until contemporary times, a months surrounding a 2008 US Presidential elections.
Only one of these couples, Joe and Angie, has an uncheckered attribute path, and even they knowledge life's ups and downs. The others tumble in and out of adore (sometimes even doubt if they were ever in love), knowledge matrimony breakdowns (their possess and those of their adult children), mental illness and unemployment--the things of life. That's not to contend it's a joyless book. It ends on an confident note, though it's an confidence gradual with realism. These characters have seen it all.
The author knows her subject and her observations are unequivocally shrewd and infrequently funny. She has also managed to emanate living, respirating characters, not clichés. Despite a vast cast, we found any impression to be entirely developed, with varying grade of likeability.
This is not a fast-paced book, so it might not be one for disturb seekers. However, if we cite contemplative novels that are not fearful to inspect a complexities of life we should unequivocally suffer 'Second Stories'.
